The Independence Monument is a 61 meter victory column on Maidan Nezalezhnosti, Independence Square, in Kyiv, commemorating the 1991 independence of Ukraine. Built in a mix of Ukrainian Baroque and Empire style and faced in white Italian marble, the column is topped by a female figure known as Berehynia holding a guelder rose branch, standing on a pedestal shaped like a Christian temple. It was inaugurated on 23 August 2001 for the tenth anniversary of independence, replacing a former Lenin statue on the same site.
