Risiera di San Sabba

Risiera di San Sabba was a Nazi concentration camp operating in Trieste during World War II, the only camp on Italian territory to include a crematorium. Officially a police detention camp, it was used chiefly to eliminate members of the resistance in the Operational Zone of the Adriatic Littoral and served as a transit camp for Jews being deported to extermination camps, mainly Auschwitz. Estimates of the number of people killed there range from about 2,000 to as many as 5,000, with victims typically killed by vehicle exhaust gas or beaten to death. Of roughly 1,450 Jews deported from the zone who passed through the camp, only around 20 survived. The site was declared a national monument in 1965 and opened as a museum in 1975.
