The Temple of Heaven is a complex of imperial religious buildings in the southeastern part of central Beijing, built for Confucian rites of state. Visited by the emperors of the Ming dynasty and later restored under the Qing, it was the site of annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for a good harvest and other seasonal rites. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, it has been described as a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design whose symbolic layout profoundly influenced architecture and planning across the Far East for centuries.
