Handan Agha Mosque

The Handan Agha Mosque is a fifteenth-century mosque near the Golden Horn in the Haskoy neighborhood of Beyoglu, Istanbul, built by Handan Agha, an official of Sultan Mehmed II, and also known as the Kuskonmaz or Birds Don't Perch Mosque. Its interior carries sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Iznik tiles along with some nineteenth-century maiolica tiles, and its basement originally served as a boathouse before land reclamation moved the shoreline away from the building. The mosque underwent repairs in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and further restoration in the 1960s, and it remains a recognized part of the Ottoman-era religious architecture of Istanbul.
