Sagrada Familia, Roman Catholic minor basilica in Barcelona, primarily designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. Construction began in 1882 under diocesan architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, who envisioned a traditional Neogothic church. Gaudi assumed control of the project the following year and transformed the church into a radically original architectural work that combined Gothic inspiration with modern engineering, geometric experimentation, and religious symbolism.
