Saint Basil's Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, is a Russian Orthodox church on Red Square in Moscow. It was built between 1555 and 1561 on the orders of Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan, and it received its present coloring by 1683. It now operates as a museum and is one of the most recognized cultural symbols of Russia.
