Joseph Chaires Plantation

Joseph Chaires Plantation was a 3,800-acre cotton plantation in southern Leon County, Florida, owned by Joseph Chaires, son of Benjamin Chaires and cousin of Green Averitt Chaires, a later Leon County commissioner. Its northern boundary ran from the southeast tip of Lake Lafayette across what is now Old St. Augustine Road, land now covered by present-day roads in the area. The 1860 Agricultural Census recorded 1,400 improved and 3,400 unimproved acres worth $50,000, an annual output of 200 bales of cotton and 5,000 bushels of corn, and 130 enslaved people held on the plantation; the source does not describe a surviving plantation house.
