Mattaponi (John Bowie Jr. House)

Mattaponi, also known as the John Bowie Jr. House, is a brick house covered in stucco near Croom in Prince George's County, Maryland, built around 1820 on the foundation of an earlier 1730s structure and named for the adjoining Mattaponi Creek. The property was part of a tract called Brooke's Reserve purchased by John Bowie Sr. for his son Captain William Bowie, and the Bowie family held extensive land and political power in the region; Robert Bowie, twice governor of Maryland (1803-1806 and 1811-1812), is buried at the estate and may have been born there, as was Walter Bowie. In December 1846 Richard Lowndes Ogle married Priscilla Mackall Bowie at the house.
