Mount Ida Plantation

Mount Ida, also known as the Walker Reynolds House, was an antebellum mansion in rural Talladega County, Alabama, between Sylacauga and Talladega, begun in the Greek Revival style by Walker Reynolds in 1840 and finished in stages through 1858, when its portico was completed. The fourteen-room house was notable for a monumental veranda carried on six fluted, red-brick columns with inverted bell-shaped capitals covered in hard plaster, described as extremely rare among antebellum Alabama homes, and for luxuries including amethyst glass sidelights and furnishings imported from New York City. The mansion burned after being struck by lightning in August 1956, and only its columns survive today, standing as ruins on privately owned land.
