Architecturally Significant Houses

A single-family house whose primary significance to this atlas is architectural: a house designed by a named architect as a deliberate demonstration of a movement, structural technique or spatial idea, intended from its own commission to be studied and cited as a landmark of residential design rather than valued chiefly for a former occupant's biography, a museum program built around it, or its place in an agricultural estate. This group gathers houses of that kind, most from the modern movement and its immediate successors, distinguishing them from the report's own broader "Cottages and Small Houses" and "Villas" labels, neither of which captures what these houses actually are: individually authored architectural statements rather than a plain small house or a historical country-house form.
