Beaver Creek Plantation was a large tobacco and slave-holding plantation built by the Hairston family, Scottish emigrants to Pennsylvania in the early 18th century, under the ownership of George Hairston. Located just outside present-day Martinsville, Virginia, it became the center of an extensive tobacco-growing and slave-trading enterprise and also produced textiles, household goods and livestock. At its height the plantation's enslaved workers tended a thousand yam plants and could make 660 candles in a single day.
