Salona (McLean, Virginia)

Residential Buildings

Salona is a former plantation house in McLean, Virginia, a brick manor built in the Federal style between 1790 and 1810 and completed by about 1812. During the War of 1812 the estate sheltered President James Madison and First Lady Dolley Madison after the British burning of Washington in 1814, and during the Civil War it served as headquarters for Union General George B. McClellan and as the site of Camp Griffin. The house and its surrounding 7.8 acres sit within a larger 52.4 acre site protected by a 1971 conservation easement held by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and a later easement managed by the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust, making it one of the last substantial open spaces in McLean. Entity-backed identity for the building-type enum value this building already carries, resolved to an architecture concept by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The building-type fact itself stays on the building unchanged.
