Herkimer Home State Historic Site

Residential Buildings

Herkimer Home State Historic Site is a historic house museum in the north part of the Town of Danube, Herkimer County, New York, south of the Mohawk River. The house was built in 1764 by Nicholas Herkimer, who died there in 1777 from wounds suffered at the Battle of Oriskany and is buried on the grounds; in 1834 it belonged to his nephew John Herkimer. The National Register infobox on the same article gives a Georgian style and an earlier date of 1750, so the construction date is stated differently by different parts of the source. The site offers a visitor center, guided tours, gardens, hiking and a picnic area, and stayed open in 2010 after a proposed closure for budget reasons met strong opposition.
