Dr. John R. Drish House

The Dr. John R. Drish House is a historic mansion at 2300 17th Street in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, built in 1837 for physician and early settler Dr. John R. Drish and constructed by enslaved artisans, with design influence attributed to state architect William Nichols. Extensive remodeling before the Civil War added Italianate features, including a three-story tower and cast-iron side porches, to the original Greek Revival design with its Doric porticoes, producing one of the most distinctive mixes of the two styles in Alabama. The house was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1975 and added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Jemison School-Drish House in 2015. It was purchased and restored by Nika McCool, reopening as an event venue in 2016.
