Fernside, Toowoomba

Fernside is a heritage-listed house at 4-6 Fernside Street in East Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. Built in stages from about 1876, with several later additions extending into the early twentieth century, it is a low, symmetrical rendered-brick house with hipped roofs, verandahs on its western and eastern sides, moulded chimneys, timber fretwork and bay windows. It was built for John Alexander Boyce, a Clerk of Petty Sessions, and Sir Arthur Kennedy, Governor of Queensland from 1877 to 1883, used the house as his summer residence. The Boyce family kept the property for more than a century across six generations before it passed to its current owners in 1993. Fernside was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992; its interiors retain moulded pressed-metal ceilings and original cedar joinery.
