Buckley Hall

Buckley Hall was a historic house at Buckley, near Rochdale, in Lancashire, England, the family seat of the Buckley family and later of the Entwistle family, with an original hall standing before 1626. The mill owner William Whitworth Schofield demolished and rebuilt the hall after 1860 to a standard of considerable opulence, and in 1887 the Brothers of Charity, acting on the initiative of Herbert Vaughan, Bishop of Salford, purchased it to open a Catholic boys' orphanage in 1888, which grew from 28 boys to as many as 300 residents and taught trades including plumbing, printing, bookbinding, joinery and boot and shoe repair. The orphanage closed in 1947 and the hall was later demolished; Buckley Hall Prison now stands on the site.
