Plantation houses of the Virginia Piedmont and the Richmond, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville and Lynchburg regions, in the Virginia Tourism Corporation's own Central Virginia region: the James River counties immediately around Richmond (Henrico, Chesterfield, Charles City, Goochland, Powhatan, Hanover, New Kent and Prince George among them), the Piedmont counties further inland (Albemarle, Orange, Louisa, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Nelson, Spotsylvania and Rappahannock), and Bedford County's Lynchburg-area estates. This is the largest of this atlas's Virginia regional groups by a wide margin, reflecting how much of colonial and antebellum Virginia's plantation wealth and population concentrated along the upper and middle James River and the Piedmont tobacco belt radiating out from Richmond, home to some of the best documented plantation houses in the atlas, among them Berkeley Plantation, Shirley Plantation's own successor estate Upper Shirley, and Thomas Jefferson's retreat house Poplar Forest.
