Coastal Virginia

Plantation houses of Tidewater Virginia, in the Virginia Tourism Corporation's own Coastal Virginia region: the Hampton Roads counties and cities (James City County, Newport News, Surry), the Northern Neck (Westmoreland, Northumberland, Lancaster, Richmond County), the Middle Peninsula (King William, King and Queen, Middlesex, Gloucester) and the Eastern Shore (Northampton). These are among the oldest plantation seats gathered in this atlas, many founded in the first century of English settlement along the rivers draining into the Chesapeake Bay, a geography of river and bay frontage distinct from the inland Piedmont estates gathered under this atlas's Central Virginia group, and distinct again from the upland Shenandoah Valley and Southside groups.
