Shenandoah Valley

Plantation houses of the northern and central Shenandoah Valley, in the Virginia Tourism Corporation's own Shenandoah Valley region: Frederick, Clarke and Rockingham counties and the country around Lexington in Rockbridge County. Settled later than the Tidewater and largely by a different stream of colonial migration, moving south down the Valley from Pennsylvania and Maryland rather than up from the coast, these estates share a limestone and bluegrass agricultural landscape west of the Blue Ridge distinct from the James and Rappahannock river plantations gathered under this atlas's other Virginia groups, several of them built for or by figures of the Valley's own Revolutionary War military leadership.
