It was commissioned by Charles Douglas Drain, youngest son of the town's founder, on a 2.5-acre property, and is considered a prominent example of Oregon's late 19th-century residential architecture. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and today houses the Drain school district's administrative offices.
