Villa Solitaria is a house on the island of Capri, Italy, built between 1907 and 1910 by the writer, engineer and botanist Edwin Cerio without a predetermined plan, working directly with local masons so that each window would frame a particular view of the surrounding landscape. The house has ceramic floors decorated with lilies and thistles and biblical inscriptions, and the futurist writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti praised it as one of Italy's first Futurist houses for its verticality and spatial innovation. From 1914 to 1924 the Scottish writer Compton Mackenzie rented the villa, which overlooks the Faraglioni rock formations, and it became a gathering place for English writers including D. H. Lawrence and W. B. Yeats. The villa received Italian monumental protection status in 1993 and was sold in 2022 to Benoit Duplat and Cristiano Leone, though the previous owning family retains rights of access to family graves on the property.
