Bauhaus

The Bauhaus was a German school of art, design and architecture founded by the architect Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919, built around a holistic approach that made no distinction between fine art, craft and design. Political pressure forced the school to relocate to Dessau in 1925, and Gropius himself designed its new purpose built campus there, constructed between 1925 and 1926 and formally inaugurated on December 4, 1926. The Dessau building embodies the Bauhaus philosophy that a school's own architecture should reflect its teaching, laid out on an asymmetric pinwheel plan with distinct wings for teaching, an auditorium and offices, and housing for students and staff, all connected by bridges. Regarded as the high point of pre war modern design in Europe, the building grew out of the same dissolution of the Weimar school and civic ambition to reconcile the city's industrial identity with its cultural life that had originally driven the move to Dessau.
