Winchester Mystery House

Residential Buildings

The Winchester Mystery House is a sprawling Victorian and Gothic-style mansion at 525 South Winchester Boulevard in San Jose, California, built in stages between 1884 and 1906 for Sarah Winchester, widow of firearms magnate William Wirt Winchester. Continuous construction under her direction produced a maze of stairways, rooms and passages; at its largest the house held around 500 rooms, and at her death in 1922 it still had 160 rooms, 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, 47 stairways and 47 fireplaces. It opened as a tourist attraction nine months after her death and has been operated by descendants of its later buyers since 1963, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Entity-backed identity for the building-type enum value this building already carries, resolved to an architecture concept by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The building-type fact itself stays on the building unchanged.
