Rundbogenstil

Rundbogenstil, meaning round-arch style, is a nineteenth-century architectural revival style that combines Byzantine, Romanesque and Renaissance elements, taking its name from its characteristic rounded arches and also featuring decorative eyebrows above windows and inverted crenellation beneath the eaves. It originated in German-speaking lands and spread through the German diaspora to Central Europe, England, Hungary and the United States. The style was deliberately developed by German architects, most notably Heinrich Hubsch, as a conscious reaction against the neo-Gothic style that had dominated the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, aiming instead to extend the noble simplicity of neoclassicism while answering the pressures of industrialism and rising German nationalism with a distinctly German national architecture.
