Villas

A large, architect-designed detached residence of notable scale and status, a building type with roots in the Roman and Italian country house tradition and carried forward into a broad international vocabulary of freestanding, non-urban houses that stand apart in scale, siting or ambition from an ordinary house, a cottage or an apartment building. The villas gathered under this group span from early twentieth century modernist landmarks reinterpreting the form in reinforced concrete and glass to houses whose own name or documented building type explicitly identifies them as a villa rather than a plain house.
