Airplane Bungalow

Early Modern Movement Architecture

The Airplane Bungalow is a residential style of the United States dating from the early twentieth century, rooted in the Arts and Crafts movement with elements shared with the American Craftsman and Prairie styles, and more popular in the western half of the country and in southwestern and western Canada. It shares low pitched gabled roofs with oversized eaves and exposed rafters with the California bungalow, but its defining feature is a single room on the second floor surrounded by windows, said to resemble an airplane cockpit and designed as a summer sleeping room with all around access to breezes. An early example is the Pleasance House in Echo Park, Los Angeles, dating from 1914, and newspaper coverage in 1916 traced the style s spread from California to a house on Montana Street in El Paso, Texas.
