De Stijl, also known as Neo Plasticism, was a Dutch art and architecture movement founded in the Netherlands in 1917 by a group of artists and architects that included the painter Piet Mondrian, the artist and theorist Theo van Doesburg and the architect Gerrit Rietveld. Its architectural style favored rectilinear lines and planes, geometric massing and a bold use of primary colors, white and black, expressing the movement's core visual vocabulary in three dimensional built form. The style's single fullest architectural realization is the Rietveld Schroder House in Utrecht, designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1924, whose rectilinear lines and planes flow from the building's exterior into an open, dynamic interior that could be reconfigured rather than divided into a fixed set of static rooms. Widely regarded as arguably the only true De Stijl building ever constructed, the house was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 and remains a protected listed monument dating to 1976.
