Vietnamese architecture developed across Vietnam's northern, central and southern regions through the Ly, Tran, Ho, Le and Nguyen dynasties before being reshaped by French colonial rule and, later, contemporary Western influence. It is marked by stilt houses with curved roofs, decorative wood carving, glazed roof tiles bearing dragon and phoenix motifs, and building orientation guided by feng shui principles, with strong historical influence from Chinese building tradition. The spiral shaped Co Loa citadel of the 2nd century BC, the Tran dynasty's Pho Minh and Binh Son pagodas and the moated Imperial City of Hue, seat of the Nguyen dynasty, are leading historical monuments, while the Hanoi Opera House and the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ho Chi Minh City mark the colonial period. Independence Palace and the General Sciences Library of Ho Chi Minh City represent its modern development.
