Azerbaijani Architecture

Azerbaijani architecture is the building tradition of Azerbaijan, typically described as combining elements of East and West across its medieval, Soviet and contemporary periods. Many medieval structures survive in modern Azerbaijan, most notably the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs within the walled city of Baku, alongside the Palace of the Shaki Khans in north central Azerbaijan, the Surakhany fire temple on the Absheron Peninsula, several mausoleums, and a number of bridges spanning the Aras River. Among its more recent architectural monuments, the decor of the Baku Metro subway stations has drawn particular notice for its lavishness.
