Tendenza

Postmodern and Contemporary Architecture

La Tendenza was an Italian architectural movement of the 1960s and 1970s associated with neo-rationalist architects including Carlo Aymonino, Giorgio Grassi and Aldo Rossi, and it arose in reaction to the modernism and functionalism that had dominated Italian architecture before and after the Second World War. The architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri was a significant influence on the movement, and the University Iuav of Venice became a center of Tendenza thought after Tafuri took the chair of Architecture History there in 1968. Rather than pursuing functionalist principles, its architects explored memory and Italy's historical architectural legacy, valuing the social and cultural significance of the established urban fabric and reintegrating historical forms and elements into contemporary design. The movement received institutional recognition through an exhibition at the 1973 Milan Triennale.
