Northwest Regional style

Postwar and Late Modern Architecture

Northwest Regional style is an architectural style popular in the Pacific Northwest of the United States between 1935 and 1960, developed as a regional variant of the International Style adapted to local terrain, climate and materials. Its defining feature is the extensive use of unpainted wood, both inside and out, drawing on abundant local species such as redwood, Douglas fir and western red cedar to produce a warmer modern architecture distinct from the concrete and stucco modernism of California. Buildings in the style integrate with their natural surroundings through asymmetrical plans, floor to ceiling glass, low-pitched roofs with overhanging eaves, and minimal ornamentation, and the style was used most often for houses, though public buildings such as libraries and churches were also built in it. Leading architects included Paul Thiry in Seattle, John Yeon in Oregon, Paul Hayden Kirk, Pietro Belluschi, Benjamin F. McAdoo, John Storrs, Herman Brookman and Saul Zaik.
