The ancient and classical styles of Europe are the building traditions of Greece and Rome. Greek architecture uses the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders to produce buildings that are simple, well proportioned and harmonious with their surroundings, and its best known types are temples such as the Parthenon, theatres such as Epidaurus and stadiums such as Olympia. Roman architecture is known for concrete domes, the innovative use of the arch, the amphitheatre, the basilica, the triumphal arch and apartment blocks, with surviving landmarks including the Pantheon and the Colosseum in Rome, the Pont du Gard in France and Hadrian's Wall in England. Concrete mattered because it was light, strong and cheaper than stone blocks.
