Formulated year places an architectural idea in the period when it was first written down or argued for. Wikipedia notes that "the earliest surviving text on architectural theories is the 1st century BC treatise De architectura" by the Roman architect Vitruvius, who held that a good building needed durability, utility and beauty together. Browsing by formulated year traces how architectural thinking has built on itself across centuries.
