Incheon International Airport opened in 2001 on reclaimed land between the islands of Yeongjong and Yongyu west of Seoul, built to replace the older, more centrally located Gimpo Airport as South Korea's principal international gateway. Its terminal design features a long, sweeping curved roof supported on a grid of slender columns, a form intended to evoke both the wings of an aircraft and the sweeping curves traditionally found on Korean roof architecture, translating a national architectural reference into a large-scale piece of modern transportation infrastructure. The building's structural roof system uses a lightweight steel space frame to span very wide column-free distances across its departure and arrival halls, allowing large open areas for passenger circulation. The airport has repeatedly been rated among the world's best for both design and service quality in international airport industry surveys, and it has expanded with additional terminals since its original opening to handle continued growth in passenger traffic.
