Bamboo is a fast-growing woody grass whose culms are used as a structural and building material across South and Southeast Asia, East Asia and parts of Latin America and Africa, valued for its high strength-to-weight ratio, renewability and the speed at which a stand can mature to harvestable size compared with hardwood timber. Traditional use ranges from scaffolding and temporary structures to load-bearing houses and bridges, and the material's hollow, jointed culms give it stiffness with relatively little mass, though its vulnerability to insect attack and moisture requires treatment for durability in permanent construction. Contemporary architects have revived bamboo for large-span roofs and pavilions, engineering it into laminated structural members that extend its traditional vernacular use into modern high-design building.
