Compressed earth block, sometimes abbreviated CEB, is a masonry unit formed by compressing moist subsoil, often stabilized with a small proportion of cement or lime, in a mechanical or hydraulic press, producing a more uniform and stronger unit than sun-dried adobe. Developed in its modern mechanized form in the mid-twentieth century, it has been promoted since as a low-embodied-energy alternative to fired brick and concrete block, particularly in regions with suitable soil and limited industrial infrastructure, and is laid in courses much like conventional brick or block for load-bearing walls.
