Fiber cement is a composite cladding and roofing material made from cement reinforced with cellulose or synthetic fibers, developed in the late nineteenth century originally with asbestos fiber before that ingredient was phased out for health reasons and replaced with cellulose and other fibers from the 1980s onward. Manufactured into siding boards, shingles and panels that can be finished to resemble wood, stucco or masonry, it offers considerably better fire resistance, moisture resistance and durability than wood or vinyl siding, and it has become a widely specified exterior cladding material in both residential and commercial construction since the 1990s.
