Fiberglass-reinforced polymer, commonly abbreviated FRP or GFRP, is a composite material made of fine glass fibers embedded in a plastic resin matrix, combining the glass fiber's tensile strength with the resin's moldability, light weight and corrosion resistance. Developed from mid-twentieth-century advances in synthetic resin chemistry, it is used architecturally for lightweight cladding panels, decorative and structural ornament, cast architectural replicas of historic stone or plaster detail, and, increasingly, structural reinforcing bars and panels as an alternative to steel in corrosive environments, valued for a strength-to-weight ratio well beyond most traditional building materials.
