Mineral wool is a fibrous insulation material made by melting rock, typically basalt, or industrial slag and spinning it into fine fibers, distinct from fiberglass insulation in its raw material and its notably higher resistance to fire, since mineral wool does not burn and can withstand temperatures well above those fiberglass tolerates. Developed commercially from the late nineteenth century onward, it is used architecturally for thermal and acoustic insulation in walls, roofs and floors, and its combination of fire resistance, sound absorption and water resistance has made it a preferred insulation choice for fire-rated assemblies and acoustically sensitive construction such as recording studios and multifamily housing.
