Plywood is an engineered wood panel made by gluing together thin layers of wood veneer with the grain of each layer rotated roughly ninety degrees from its neighbors, a cross-lamination that gives the panel more uniform strength and dimensional stability than solid sawn timber of the same thickness. Commercial production began in the early twentieth century and expanded rapidly after adhesive technology improved during the Second World War, and it became a staple of modern construction for wall and roof sheathing, subflooring, formwork for poured concrete and, in exposed structural and furniture applications, as a finish material in its own right, notably in mid-twentieth-century modernist furniture and interiors.
