TPO roofing membrane, short for thermoplastic polyolefin, is a single-ply synthetic roofing membrane made from a blend of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber, produced in large sheets that are heat-welded together at the seams to form a continuous waterproof covering for flat and low-slope roofs. Introduced in the 1990s as an alternative to older single-ply membranes such as EPDM and PVC, it is typically manufactured in a reflective white or light color that reduces roof surface temperature and cooling energy demand, and its heat-welded seams, rather than adhesive or tape, are generally regarded as stronger and more reliable over the membrane's service life. It has become one of the most widely installed low-slope roofing membranes in commercial construction since the early 2000s.
