Vinyl siding is an exterior cladding material made from rigid polyvinyl chloride, formed into overlapping horizontal or vertical panels that mimic the appearance of painted wood clapboard while requiring no painting and comparatively little maintenance. Commercialized in the United States from the 1960s onward as a lower-cost, low-maintenance alternative to wood and aluminum siding, it became the most widely used residential exterior cladding material in North America by the late twentieth century, valued for its low upfront and lifetime cost though criticized by preservationists and some architects for its appearance and its poor performance in extreme heat and fire compared with masonry or fiber-cement alternatives.
