30th Street Station

30th Street Station is a major intermodal transit hub in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the third busiest Amtrak station in the United States, carrying more than 5.5 million passengers as of 2025. It opened in 1933 as Pennsylvania Station-30th Street, designed by the Chicago firm Graham, Anderson, Probst and White to allow through traffic between New York City and Washington, D.C. rather than the dead end arrangement of its predecessor. The building is built in a Classical Revival style with Art Deco touches, most visibly in its grand concourse, where travertine faced walls rise to a coffered ceiling painted gold, red and cream. For its era the station was unusually advanced, equipped with a pneumatic tube system, an electronic intercom, a reinforced roof strong enough for small aircraft to land on, and even hospital and mortuary facilities, reflecting its role in the newly electrified Northeast Corridor; in 2020 it was renamed in honor of the former congressman William H. Gray III.
