50 Berkeley Square

50 Berkeley Square is a Grade II listed townhouse in Mayfair, London, once the home of British Prime Minister George Canning. It became known from the late 19th century as one of London's most reputedly haunted houses, a reputation that grew after the recluse Thomas Myers occupied the property from 1859 to 1874 and let it fall into disrepair; various later legends describe an attic haunted by a young woman, a madman kept locked away, or a murdered child. Modern investigators regard most of the ghost accounts of the 1870s and 1880s as exaggerated or invented by later writers, and no phenomena have been reported since the Maggs Brothers bought the house in the late 1930s.
