8 House

8 House, known in Danish as 8-tallet, is a mixed-use development in the Orestad district of Copenhagen, Denmark, designed by the architect Bjarke Ingels of Bjarke Ingels Group and completed in 2010, four years after it was commissioned in 2006 as the third of Ingels' housing projects in the Orestad area. The building takes the shape of a figure eight, or a bowtie folded around two courtyards, and combines about 61,000 square meters of housing across three different residential types with roughly 10,000 square meters of retail and office space along its ground levels. A continuous ramped path for pedestrians and cyclists winds around the building's perimeter and climbs as high as its tenth floor, letting residents cycle from street level directly to their front doors, and the project was, at its scale, Denmark's largest private development to date.
