Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial

The Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial is a First World War military cemetery covering about 42 acres in Belleau, in northern France, at the foot of the hill where the Battle of Belleau Wood was fought in 1918, with further graves from the later fighting at Chateau-Thierry the same summer. It was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1937, its monument designed by the Boston firm Cram and Ferguson with sculpted figures by the French artist Alfred Bottiau, and it is administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The cemetery holds 2,289 burials, including 250 unidentified service members, and a memorial chapel built directly over a former front-line trench carries the names of 1,060 further service members missing in action; the grounds also include the separate Chateau-Thierry American Monument and a monument honoring the United States Marines who fought at Belleau Wood. In 2023 the site was designated part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing recognizing the First World War's Western Front funerary and memorial landscape.
