The Ajanta Caves are thirty rock cut Buddhist cave monuments near Aurangabad, in the Indian state of Maharashtra, dating from the second century BCE to about 480 CE. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are regarded as masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, containing paintings and rock cut sculpture considered among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art.
