The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is a suspension bridge linking the city of Kobe on the Japanese island of Honshu with Iwaya on Awaji Island, carrying the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway across the Akashi Strait. Completed in 1998, it held the record for the longest central span of any suspension bridge in the world, at 1,991 meters, until it was surpassed by the Canakkale Bridge in Turkey in 2022.
