Aldo Leopold Shack and Farm

The Aldo Leopold Shack and Farm is a historic property in rural Sauk County, Wisconsin, on the south bank of the Wisconsin River northeast of Baraboo. The conservationist Aldo Leopold began acquiring the roughly 264-acre farm in 1935 and used it as a family retreat until his death in 1948, restoring a former chicken coop as the shack where he wrote much of A Sand County Almanac. The property, including former farmland restored to native prairie and floodplain forest, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2009, and is now owned and operated by the Aldo Leopold Foundation.
