Alexander Brown House

The Alexander Brown House, at 726 West Onondaga Street in Syracuse, New York, is a Richardsonian Romanesque mansion built in 1895 of Potsdam sandstone with a Spanish tile roof. It was the home of Alexander T. Brown, an inventor and co-founder of Franklin Motors and the Brown-Lipe-Chapin Company, later absorbed into General Motors, who built engineering features into the house including a terra cotta shaped glass skylight, a hydraulic elevator running from basement to attic, and a house-wide vacuum system. Its 5,500-square-foot carriage house could hold up to ten cars and included a car lift. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
